What is audio format conversion?

It's repackaging audio data into a different standard. There are two main groups: <ul> <li><strong>Lossless (WAV, FLAC):</strong> Keeps 100% of the original sound, but files are huge.</li> <li><strong>Lossy (MP3, M4A, OGG):</strong> Discards frequencies the human ear barely notices to shrink file size.</li> </ul> <em>The golden rule:</em> Going from Lossless to Lossy loses data permanently. Going the other way only wastes your disk space!

Does converting MP3 to WAV make it sound better?

<strong>No.</strong> MP3 is lossy. The data thrown away during that first compression is gone for good. Converting it back to WAV just inflates the file size 5-10x with zero quality improvement. You can't bring back lost data.

How to maintain the best quality when converting?

<ol> <li><strong>If your source is WAV/FLAC:</strong> Keep it that way, or convert to another lossless format.</li> <li><strong>If you need smaller files:</strong> Compress straight from the original source to MP3 or M4A <em>once</em>. Never compress an already compressed file.</li> </ol>

Does round-trip converting degrade quality?

<strong>Yes</strong>, if lossy formats are involved. Every time you convert between lossy formats (e.g., MP3 to M4A), the encoder throws away more data. The more round trips, the worse it sounds. Best practice: Keep one lossless master (WAV) and encode from it whenever you need a new format.
