Can AI mastering fix a bad mix?

AI mastering takes a finished mix and rebalances loudness, frequency and dynamics to produce a track that sounds louder, tighter and more even, the same final step a track gets before release. Upload the mix, the AI processes it, download the mastered file. The tool is still being built and is not open to users yet.
What is mastering?
Mastering is the final processing stage a track goes through, after mixing and immediately before release. It no longer touches individual instruments; it works on the finished stereo mix, with three goals. First, correcting the overall frequency balance so the song holds up everywhere, from a phone speaker to headphones to a car system. Second, bringing the overall loudness to the level streaming platforms expect, so your track does not sit noticeably quieter than the one before it in a playlist. Third, tightening the dynamic range just enough that the track feels solid without losing room to breathe. AI mastering does those three things automatically, by comparing your mix against the characteristics of a large body of released tracks in the same genre.
Can AI mastering fix a bad mix?
No. Mastering is the final processing layer, applied after the mix, not a replacement for it. If the original has serious frequency imbalance, a buried vocal, or technical issues like clipping, AI mastering just makes those problems louder rather than fixing them: garbage in, garbage out, only bigger.
How is AI mastering different from a human mastering engineer?
AI applies a data-driven processing chain, fast and consistent, which suits demos, social posts and quick listening copies. A human engineer can hear context, genre conventions and artistic intent and make judgment calls the AI cannot yet make. For a genuine commercial release, human mastering is still the safer choice.
When should you use AI mastering?
When the mix is already solid and you need a fast finishing pass: a demo for a label, a rough copy to listen back on, or social content that needs to sit at a competitive loudness. If the mix itself is still being fixed, finish that first: mastering is a final polish step, not a repair step.
How is mastering different from audio enhancement?
They assume two different kinds of input file. Mastering assumes the mix is already good, everything is in its place, and all that remains is finishing it for release. Audio enhancement assumes the opposite: the recording has problems, the voice is dull, there is distortion, the level is low, and it needs rescuing. Running a phone recording through mastering will not save it, it will only make every flaw evenly louder. Running a finished mix through an audio enhancer is equally wrong, because an enhancer processes for speech clarity rather than release standards.
