What is a "stem" in music separation?

A stem is a single isolated layer of audio pulled out of the original mix: the vocal alone, the drums alone, the bass alone. Vocal removal, specifically, means pulling the vocal stem out of everything else in the song.

Unlike the original file (one mixed block of audio you cannot pull apart without a tool), each resulting stem is an independent file you can listen to and use on its own.

How do 2, 4 and 5 stems differ?

What determines the quality of a vocal removal?

First, the quality of the source file: a 320kbps or wav file always separates cleaner than a heavily compressed clip from an unknown source. Second, the density of the mix: the more instruments and reverb effects a song has, the harder it is to remove the vocal completely. A stripped-back acoustic recording with one guitar and a lead vocal separates far more cleanly than a produced pop track with layered harmonies, pads and delay on the voice.

The stem count you choose also matters less than people expect: picking 5 stems does not make the vocal removal itself cleaner than 2 stems, it only splits the remaining instrumental into more pieces. If your only goal is removing the voice, 2 stems is usually the simplest choice.

Why does a faint echo or metallic ring sometimes remain?

This is not a rare glitch: it is a technical limit of every separation tool available today, including the most expensive paid ones. The AI predicts the boundary between voice and instruments based on frequency and amplitude; wherever the two layers overlap tightly, that boundary is not clean.

  • Residual echo: a faint trace of the vocal is still audible in the instrumental, usually most noticeable at the climax.
  • A metallic or tinny ring in high frequencies: happens when the model mistakenly clips part of an instrument's high range, thinking it is the voice.
  • The instrumental thins out exactly where the vocal is loudest, because the model "borrows" some of the instrument energy.
  • A sustained instrument note occasionally disappears entirely if it shares the same pitch as the vocal at that moment.

Running a song through a technical tool is not, by itself, an infringement: you are processing a recording you already have lawful access to (bought, streamed legally), similar to adjusting EQ or trimming a clip. Infringement arises at the next step: releasing, distributing or monetizing the separated result without rights to the underlying work.

Copyright law generally treats the song's authorship rights and the recording/performer's related rights as two separate layers of ownership. Splitting a recording into stems does not erase either the composer's or the rights holder's ownership. You are only performing a technical operation on the recording; the underlying ownership is untouched.
